First Impressions

No doubt about it, getting an interview for a job in today's economy is a major step forward. With so many people laying off employees and putting on hiring freezes, it is amazing when your resume gets noticed. You have to treat this interview as if it were a load of silver bullion suddenly arriving on your doorstep' a one time opportunity that you have to make the most of. Your resume will have given the employer a suggestion as to your work history, but this interview will be their first impression of you as a person.

And of course, that first impression will be what either sells the interviewing manager on you as a potential employee, or tells them not to bother giving you a call back. Whether you are going to talk to an interviewer for a position as an administrative assistant at a Brampton dentists office or at a major newspaper, there are some simple rules that should help you make the most of this interview opportunity.

The first thing you need to do is to dress up. This is hard for most people, as dressing up can vary from one person to the next. You might wonder why you need to wear a button up shirt and slacks for a company where you'll be making compression lugs. Just remember that the type of work you are interviewing for is not the reason you are getting dressed nicely. You are doing so to impress the person who is talking to you, to let them know that you are taking this opportunity seriously.

It is important to note that you want to dress to show yourself off as well as possible, but this does not (always) meaning dressing in a way you would for a night on the town. A lot of women make the mistake of putting on club clothes thinking it will get them in the door of an office. Sometimes it works, but more often than not they can come off as trying too hard and potentially being liabilities in the workplace. So dress nicely, but conservatively.

Before you go to the interview, try practicing with some common questions that interviewers ask. If you stutter and look unsure of yourself during the interview, you will leave the same impression as drop through valves; in other words, you will quickly disappear. Think about the answers you are going to give beforehand, and make sure that they are honest. Interviewers will know if you are trying to pull one over on them.

Finally, companies really like it when you know something about them and show it during an interview. Do a bit of research on the firm of Riverside bankruptcy lawyers you're interviewing with before you go in and talk to them. Showing that you know their business will let them know you are keen and ready to go.
